As illiberal and authoritarian trends are on the rise—both in fragile and seemingly robust democracies—there is growing concern about the longevity of liberalism and democracy. The purpose of The Emergence of Illiberalism (Routledge 2020) is to draw on the analytical resources of various disciplines and public policy approaches to reflect on the current standing of liberal democracy. Leading social scientists from different disciplinary backgrounds aim to examine the ideological and structural roots of the current crisis of liberal democracies, in the West and beyond, conceptually and empirically.
The volume is divided into two main parts:
This volume will be of great interest to teachers and students of politics, sociology, political theory and comparative government.
With the conclusion of the first term of US President Donald Trump, the Handbuch Politik USA (Handbook on US Politics), co-edited by Boris Vormann, Christian Lammert and Markus B. Siewert, Springer is issuing a new and completely overhauled and extended edition of the compendium. In 44 contributions, Social Scientists and experts on US politics provide insight into the fundamental structures, agents, and mechanisms of US politics and locate them within their context. The compendium serves as a resource for students and teachers of Political and Social Sciences, representatives of politics and the media, as well as the interested public.
In Democracy in Crisis (Penn University Press, 2019), we argue that the rise of populism in North Atlantic states is not the cause of a crisis of governance but its result. This crisis has been many decades in the making and is intricately linked to the rise of a certain type of political philosophy and practice in which economic rationality has hollowed out political values and led to an impoverishment of the political sphere more broadly. The process began in the 1980s, when the United States and Great Britain decided to unleash markets in the name of economic growth and democracy. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, several countries in Europe followed suit and marketized their educational, social, and healthcare systems, which in turn increased inequality and fragmentation. The result has been a collapse of social cohesion and trust that the populists promise to address but only make worse.
In the midst of renationalization tendencies and a looming climate catastrophe, new counter-movements stress the potentials of a sustainable, green economy. As the essays in Contours of the Illiberal State (Campus/The University of Chicago Press, 2019) contend, any democratic project that seeks a 'green new deal' will need to transcend the bareknuckle technological utopias of the smart economy. Foregrounding the role of state work and labor in global production networks, this book dissects the ways in which the US state, often presumed to be the most-liberal and least-interventionist of all contexts, has in fact always been more than just a market fixer. Its role as an enabler, shaper and developer of markets raises pertinent questions of social justice and political legitimacy in rapidly changing worlds of work.
